Keeping tree roots out
Roots need water and food to grow, and your sewer drain is full of both. A thin root slips in through the smallest crack. Then it grows thicker and pushes the gap wider.
Your options
- Cut down the tree. It works, but it is harsh, and not something we’d suggest if you like your trees.
- Pour root killer down the drain. These products are often toxic. They can harm other living things and may kill the tree.
- Cut the roots out. A water jetter cuts the roots and flushes them away. But they grow back through the same crack.
- Reline the drain. A new lining seals every crack and gap, so the roots have no way back in.

What does a stormwater drain do?
It carries away the rain that lands on your roof, driveway, paths and paving. The water runs through pipes under the ground to a creek or river, then out to sea. So never wash paint or chemicals into it.
Can I clear a blocked toilet myself?
Stop flushing it first, or it may overflow. With gloves on, pull out anything you can see, then try a heavy duty plunger. If it keeps blocking, the problem is likely deeper in the sewer. See how to unblock a toilet drain.

Clearing blocked drains
A blocked drain is a pain. It can also cause health problems and damage your home. Most blockages happen in one of two drains: the sewer or the stormwater.
- It’s a sewer problem if it affects things inside your home, like toilets, sinks, basins, baths or showers.
- It’s a stormwater problem if it shows up most in heavy rain. Think blocked downpipes, pits and overflowing grates. Tree roots growing into the pipe are the usual cause.

We get the background
When you book, we ask about the blockage so your Drain Man is informed. Onsite, your Drain Man will confirm the details of the job and then get straight to work.
We look with a camera, then clear it
An in-drain camera finds where the blockage is. A high pressure water jet or a drain clearing machine clears it. Then we run the camera again, and you get the before and after footage.
We fix the cause
Your Drain Man shows you how to avoid more blockages. If the pipe needs it, you get a repair plan for a permanent fix.
Drain relining
Got a broken, collapsed, blocked or root filled drain? We clear the blockage without making things worse.
Our no dig drain relining uses trenchless technology. So you don’t pay to dig up and replace driveways, paths, patios or gardens. Every relined drain carries a lifetime warranty.
We use CCTV cameras to find the cause and high pressure water jets to clean the drain before we reline it. We film every job, so you see exactly what we see.
We can reline a whole sewer or stormwater drain, or just patch a short section. You end up with a stronger drain that flows better. Relined drains keep tree roots out, don’t leak, are stronger than the old pipe and are guaranteed for life.

Paul is a qualified plumber with more than 25 years in the trade. He joined The Drain Man in 2020. He clears, cleans and relines drains, and is often first on site to clear a blockage.
